DeFrees Family Memorial Fund Fall 2011 Distributions
The Oversight Committee for the DeFrees Family Memorial Fund met on Tuesday, November 16, 2011, and reviewed several grant applications from nonprofit organizations.
The Committee distributed $39,083 in grants as follows:
$10,000 grant to the Paws Along the River (formerly Humane Society of Warren County) in memory of Mary Garvey, Director Emerita of DeFrees Family Foundation and Memorial Fund. This was in the form of a resolution memorializing Ms. Garvey for her lifetime of service in upholding the ideals of Joseph & Barbara DeFrees. Click to view resolution.- $15,000 to the Warren Library Association to enable them to expand and enrich their collection of books and other materials for children.
- $8,333 to the Warren General Hospital for their Dare to Care program that is a vascular screening that includes education, lab work, ultrasound and medical consultation. This program served 844 people in the past year and has helped save lives of those at risk of vascular complications.
- $3,000 to Law Enforcement Explorer Post #312 (a division of the Boy Scouts) for young men and women ages 15-21 interested in police work. This grant will support 14 people attending a National Explorer Conference at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado.
- $1,750 to Family Services of Warren County for a Healthy Relationships Program coordinator to attend an educational program entitled, Creating a Process of Change in Men Who Batter at the Domestic Violence Intervention Program in Duluth Minnesota. The grant will also support the purchase of collateral curriculum and materials.
- $1,000 to the Warren County Sheriff’s Office to cover the last portion of funding a snowmobile to search for lost hikers and hunters, assisting in medical calls and accidents on local trails and remote locations within Warren County and contiguous counties.
The next meeting for the DeFrees Family Memorial Fund Oversight Committee will be on March 6, 2012.

The DeFrees Family Foundation was dissolved on December 31, 2011 and the resulting organization is now known as the DeFrees Family Memorial Fund. This Fund is a component fund within the Community Foundation of Warren County. The new phone number for the Fund is (814) 726-9553. David Martin is the Chairman and Secretary of the Oversight Committee and Robert Crowley serves as the Vice Chairman. Other committee members are Mary Garvey, Dr. Howard R. Ferguson Jr., Bernard J. Hessley, Esq., Elsa Redding, and Susan Merritt.
